Ingredients

  • 3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour (spoon and level into measuring cup)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick butter, room temperature (8 tablespoons)
  • 1 12-ounce beer, room temperature (I like to use a brown or amber ale)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Generously grease a bread pan with 1 tablespoon butter.
  • In a small bowl, melt 4 tablespoons butter. Let cool slightly, so it's not hot.
  • In a large mixing bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Pour in the melted butter and then the beer. Use a sturdy spoon to mix together until combined.
  • Transfer the dough to the prepared bread pan and spread into an even layer. This is a rustic looking bread, so don't worry about it looking perfect.
  • In a small bowl, melt the remaining 3 tablespoons of butter and pour over the dough.
  • Bake for 50-55 minutes, or until the top is lightly golden.
  • Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before slicing. I like to eat the bread with lots of butter and honey!
