Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 16 ounces chili beans
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 ½ tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoons mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
  • hamburger buns
  • optional toppings: sliced cheese, tomatoes, pickles, onions, jalapenos

Instructions

  • Cook the ground beef and onion in large skillet over medium-high heat until no longer pink, about 7-8 minutes.
  • Mix in all of the remaining ingredients except the cheese. Let simmer over low for 5-10 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat and mix in the cheese until melted.
  • Serve with your favorite toppings!

Notes

Slow Cooker: Add the meat and all the remaining ingredients except the cheddar cheese to the slow cooker. Stir together. Cook on high for 2-3 hour or low for 4-6 hours. Mix in the cheese and reduce to warm until you're ready to serve.
Healthier serving option: Instead of using a bun, these sloppy joes are super delicious served over a baked potato! I like to top my potato with butter and a sprinkle of salt then the sloppy joe meat and a dollop of sour cream!
If the sauce is too thick: You can thin out the sauce by mixing in a little water, chicken broth or beef broth to reach your desired consistency.
